Dangerous Tour – Did Michael Jackson sing live? Introduction

Did Michael Jackson lip sync the Dangerous Tour or did he sing live?

The Dangerous tour is probably my favourite Michael Jackson tour. Michael opened the tour in Munich, Germany in 1992. We have already had an overview of the tour which you can read here as well as a specific look at his Bucharest show of the tour and the DVD release.

We have also had a close look at the opening night concert in Munich on the 27th June 1992 (click here). In addition to this, we have already taken a closer look at the “History tour” and whether he sang live or not (part one, part two and part three).

Michael Jackson Dangerous Tour Rehearsals

Uniquely for a Michael Jackson concert, we actually have footage of the show being rehearsed and created at a sound stage over at Michael Jackson’s home. We will certainly be taking a closer look at this in the future but one thing is very clear: Michael Jackson sings all of the songs 100% live.

History Tour Rehearsals

That said, just because Michael sing’s in the rehearsal, doesn’t mean he sings in the show live. As we looked at a few days ago, Michael rehearsed “Stranger in Moscow” live on the History tour but certainly didn’t go on to perform it live.

Michael Jackson and friends 1999 rehearsals

The same goes for his “Michael Jackson and friends 1999” concert series. Michael rehearsed with no lead vocals or backing tracks (sometimes on very low, with a microphone on though) – see “Earth Song” rehearsal for the Korea show here.

In the Munich rehearsals for the same show, the band rehearsed completely instrumentally with no lead vocals.

“This is it” rehearsals

Although, whilst on stage, Michael Jackson sang completely live for “This is it”, this was not completely shown in the actual broadcast, with a high proportion being from other sources than the live microphone.

We will look at all of these in more detail at a later date.

Michael Jackson’s Sound Technicians

It looks as if very few people knew one hundred per cent, in the crew and band, that Michael Jackson mimed or lip synced. It sounds as if most rehearsals were live and then a decision was made before the concert whether it would be live or not – This would probably be pretty guarded.

We see on Michael’s left, just out of view, a section of computers and a technician, which Michael often signals to. We also see Brad Buxer, in later shows, point out certain “Hits” in this direction. As well as a close up of the computers and technicians during the rehearsals for the show in Bucharest, Romania, where the cameras roam freely around the stage and around the band whilst they set up and rehearse.

The gentleman is just sitting and watching, as Michael is not on stage at the time and we have no need of lead vocals. The vocals were probably controlled, when not sung live, by him and it was probably between the band director, Michael, his computer technicians and the mixing desk crew in the middle of the stadium who do all of the levels, along with the lighting crew.

The Dangerous tour! Did Michael Jackson sing live?

Michael Jackson did indeed sing many songs live on the tour and he certainly sounded amazing! We will take a look at each song, starting with “Jam”. As always, we do have exceptions and the MAIN exception on this tour was the opening night show in Munich.

Many changes were implemented after this show.

Dangerous Tour songs!

1) Jam!

Did Michael sing “Jam” live on the Dangerous Tour?

Michael Jackson’s live performance of Jam is definitely a favourite of most fans. During the rehearsals we hear Michael sing live but during the actual shows Michael lip synced “Jam”. The live “sound” was created by having the backing singers sections live as well as turning on Michael’s microphone at the beginning of the song, whilst he let’s out his “Hoooo’s” and then turning the microphone on at later times in the song like, just before the side moonwalk section toward the end. A very good example of this is the concert in Wembley stadium.

We have no exceptions to this, Michael mimed every show, sometimes with a microphone on for affects.

This caused big trouble in the Dangerous tour concert Rotselaar, Belgium where the lead vocal backing track went totally out of sync because Ricky Lawson, the drummer came in two counts too early and the rapper didn’t adjust for this causing the whole band, with the backing tracks and computers to have to be changed. It could have been solved without all the mess if the backing singer/rapper had stopped for 2 counts but as he carried on and wasn’t stopping for anybody, the whole band, to Michael’s inconvenience and annoyance had to take a few moments to reset and catch up.

Although, he went with the Keyboardists, live horn section so he had no real choice … the horns probably should have been held back for two counts to resolve the issue at the time. Michael looked angry though.

You can watch it unfold here.

Jam live in Moscow, Russia

We also have to take a look at the Moscow concert. The stage was covered in water because it was raining very heavily and Michael was skidding around to emphasizes the point. He also forgot to start singing with the backing track! It’s fun to see how an uncontrolled slide across the stage has no affect on the clear vocals! :-)

We continue tomorrow!
