Did Michael Jackson sing live on the Dangerous Tour? Part One

Did Michael Jackson mime the Dangerous tour? Or did he sing live? We’ve already started to take a look at this with our introduction to this article and we’ll continue with some of the other songs today.

We have already looked at “Jam”, so we will move onto the second song of the tour “Wanna be starting something”. On our previous look at whether Michael Jackson mimed the History tour I forgot to add something, in our notes about the same song.

Michael Jackson has always sung “wanna be starting something” live and we rarely hear him talk about sound issues, although during songs like “Jam” and “Stranger in Moscow”, often playing around and adjusting his microphone. Anyway…. In his History Tour concert in Cologne, Germany Michael actually spoke about the “balance” of the speakers on stage and the sound. In between “Wanna be …” and “Stranger in Moscow”, Michael said that the “Balance was very bad today”, which is only a real concern if you are singing live…. back to the Dangerous Tour though!

2) Wanna be startin somethin!

Did Michael sing “Wanna be startin somethin” live on the Dangerous Tour?

Michael Jackson sang this song LIVE on the tour. As stated previously, he never mimed or lip synced this song in his career. Michael often changed the words around and missed words out. In the opening concert of the tour Michael sang the song in a higher key.

In later shows in he tour, like in South America and Taiwan, Michael’s voice was really strained and he also made quite a lot of mistakes – probably due to the overwhelming stress of the allegations made against him, which forced him to shut the tour down.

This song was very eventful because it is a high tempo song and the first song of the concert that Michael sang live which meant that the crowd were really energetic too.

We will go into more detail about this song in the specific concert reviews coming soon.

3) Human Nature!

Did Michael sing “Human Nature” live on the Dangerous Tour?

It is pretty obvious … Michael sang this song completely live on every show. He was often out of breath – especially in the Bucharest concert! I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised to hear Michael sing this in “This is it” live because it was a highlight and actually sounded better than on the Dangerous tour – vocally, anyway. I think that the band did an amazing job and created a magical ending.

4) Smooth Criminal!

Did Michael sing “Smooth Criminal” live on the Dangerous Tour?

Are you ready for this? Steady yourself 🙂 Michael did not sing this song live on the tour and lip synced every night, We have already said that it is a very difficult song to sing live especially with the dancing.

We do have an exception on the opening night in Munich where Michael sang some lines live but this was not prolonged.

We have somebody on a mixing desk doing a great job, because he starts the first word on the track, fades out waits for Michael to sing live, if nothing happens he fades up … very well done.

In the Bucharest concert on the tour we have an amazing thing done which really adds to the “Live” impression of the vocals:

1) The vocals are effected. They are tweaked to add reverberation and other effects to give a different sound from the original and the impression of the microphone being on – this is very well done and hardly done on the History tour.

2) The level of the pre recorded vocal track is altered, manually, giving the impression of him singing live. For example. The first line in “Smooth Criminal” is lower in volume than the second line which is lower than the third, by which time we have full volume and not in a too obvious way. (Sometime if you go straight into pre recorded vocals full volume it sounds too obviously mimed – like on Top of the pops or something.)

3) The last line is completely live. What also adds to the effect is that Michael’s real live vocals sound very similar to the actual vocals on this tour, so the difference is not obvious. Have a look at the Bucharest Smooth Criminal and listen closely and you’ll catch it.

That’s it for today! More tomorrow!
