We started taking a closer look at “Scream”, the opening song of the tour and got to “Smooth Criminal” (click here for part one).
Today we will investigate “You are not alone” to “Dangerous” and some of the other songs in between that Michael only performed at the beginning of the tour and were replaced (by song’s like “Blood on the dance floor” or dropped completely.
8 ) You are not alone!
Did Michael sing “You are not alone” live on the History Tour?
Michael Jackson performed his worldwide number one “You are not alone” on the History tour and he lip synced the song. He also sang the last section live which starts just after the last long note, when it breaks down just to the choir and Michael.
This vocal track of this song is interesting because the first word (“another”) seems to cause an issue because it doesn’t fit neatly on a “four four” beat, causing issues with the first word. Maybe this is the reason that Michael often started the song OFF STAGE and walked on mid verse. In the first Brunei concert it sounds like they have done something to shorten the first word.
This was a fan favourite at the concert and was never sang live in it’s entirety in a live show.
9) The Way You Make Me Feel!
Did Michael sing “The Way You Make Me Feel” live on the History Tour?
A great song from the tour and a great performance! I still can’t believe that this could ever be dropped but you can’t do them all. Michael Jackson didn’t sing this song and lip synced it on nearly every concert. I think that this works perfectly for this show as there is a lot of action going on, on stage. Michael’s microphone was turned on for the last word “OOOOOooooooh!” … which failed on most occasions!
Sometime Michael sand this song live AFTER the break with the dancers … the last line. He did this on the first leg of the tour in Amsterdam, for example, which you can see here. Michael also, for example in Moscow, used a handheld microphone instead of his usual head microphone, which is odd, because he mimed it just the same. One of the best songs on the tour!
10) Jackson 5 Medley – I want you back,The love you save and I’ll be there!
Did Michael sing the “Jackson 5” live on the History Tour?
Michael Jackson sang these songs live for 40 years! That’s a long time. He sang them all completely live. One reason might because he had no source material to access … it would have been of a 10 year old singing anyway! He could have always re sung them in a studio (like Madonna) but I think Michael was way too busy for that. The songs have been lowered and key over the years and Michael performed them well … I think that this section was too much of the show at the expense of other great songs (like “Bad”, “Man in the mirror”, for example) but as I said before, you can’t do them all!
11) Off the wall medley – Rock with you, Off the Wall and Don’t stop til you get enough!
Did Michael sing the “Off the Wall medley” live on the History Tour?
The 70’s medley that Michael performed on the first part of his tour. Again, one of my favourites and can’t believe it was dropped! Musically, one of the best of the tour! Was it sung live? Not a note! 🙂 Well actually, he did introduce the medley live and he did often sing the last line live, often coming in too early and surprising the band, which often caused trouble for band director Brad Buxer! (see prague for example). Don’t stop til you get enough had about 5 layers of Michael’s vocals and it looks like he tries to mime each one simultaneously on this tour 🙂
12) Billie Jean!
Did Michael sing “Billie Jean” live on the History Tour?
Surprisingly, Michael did not sing this song live on the tour. The song was lip synced until just after the moonwalk section. Remember that Michael, if miming only has the source material to use, if he doesn’t re record it specially and it literally switches to a live microphone just before the original album version would usually fade out.
Michael often after the switch sang this very well indeed, like he always sang it live, especially in the Scandinavian leg of the tour. He also extended this section which means that proportionality he often sang live for just under 50% of the song – which is quite a lot (for example in New Zealand).
Did Michael sing “Thriller” live on the History Tour?
Michael Jackson mimed this song on the History tour and did not sing any of it live. This is odd because he usually sang certain sections live but for this song, mimed the lot.
There are no real exceptions, except 🙂 in New Zealand, in Auckland, the lead vocal backing track was turned down, or failed for the the first line, so Michael sang the first line (or one word) live whilst the back up kicked in (or they just turned the volume up).
14) Beat it!
Did Michael sing “Beat it” live on the History Tour?
Michael Jackson sang the lead in on the crane live but mimed the actual song. After lip syncing the main song, he sings live from the point when it breaks down and he interacts with the audience again. It’s all live from that point on (basically from when the dancers appear on the stage).
If you remember we have spoken about the source material and you can see clearly that this performance and dance section is not on the original or any source material so they would have to do it live or re record it – you can also tell because Michael’s backing vocals have also dropped out and it is completely live vocalists (whilst the first parts are a combination of both from the source material). Certain musical elements have dropped out because they can’t be pre-set because the dance section takes as long as Michael takes to chill out, get a drink etc
I am surprised at how often Michael’s microphone failed at the beginning of “Beat it” on this tour.
15) Come together and D.S!
Did Michael sing “Come together and D.S” live on the History Tour?
Michael dropped these two songs early in the tour and I think they needed to be dropped. They were both mimed and not sang live(but I would say that the backing singers gave “Come together” a good live feel in their lines, which were live).
Did Michael sing “Dangerous” live on the History Tour?
Michael Jackson mimed this song and did not sing it live. In fact, he only sang it live in a court case deposition for the jury! He sang it well, of course. He also lip synced it on the Dangerous tour.
On Michael’s opening night of the tour in Prague, Czech Republic, Michael sang the breakdown section towards the end live – he never did again
In Ostend, Belgium, 1997 Michael decided to sing half of the song live. It switched to play back and lip syncing after the second “Smooth Criminal” line on song. He made a mistake at the beginning, starting the second line too late, which made him miss his “Hit” cue, which is on a pre started track.
This also goes to show that Michael’s vocals are certainly on a separate controllable layer in the mix.
We’ll wrap this up with the final part of the concert tomorrow!
