MICHAEL JACKSON HISTORY TOUR LIVE IN SEOUL, KOREA (conclusion)

This is part 3 of our History tour in Seoul, Korea article/review. You can read part 1 here and part 2 here. The last concert included a very unusual incident during “Earth Song”. We are going to take a look from “Beat it” to the conclusion of the concert “History”.

Beat it

Of note during this song: No Jennifer Batten for the solo. Greg Howe performed it well, a couple of mistakes but still well done. We have 6 dancers for the fight sequence instead of the later 4. Although, for this concert on the tour Michael performed the main “Beat it”dance with only four dancers, he actually danced it with 6 during several of the concerts on the first leg of the tour. It’s a pity he didn’t keep the 6 because the stage is so big compared to his Dangerous and Bad tour stages that sometimes you just need to fill it with action and more would be better, especially when the audience are so far away. Good performance.

Come together and D.S

Michael performable the Beatles song “Come together” on the first few concerts of the tour, later dropping it (along with D.S). He changed his costume/jacket most shows and this was the first time he performed it on tour, in fact it was the first time live since his “Moonwalker” performance of the song. D.S was added but later dropped. The whole section was replaced by “Blood on the dance floor” and thankfully so. Very uneventful and needed to be replaced.

Dangerous

Since Dangerous was added to the last few shows of the Dangerous tour it has evolved massively. For this tour Michael took out the verses and added little breaks. I personally think he should have kept the live elements and verses, so you actually get a sense of the song. I think that this performance is perfect for an award show or indoor more intimate stage but lacks impact in a stadium in comparison to his Dangerous tours “Dangerous” performance (the small moves are lost and missed by most of the stadium). I will come to that later though. This version, in the early part of the tour also had amplified keyboard effects and additional dancers from the “Smooth Criminal” section. Very good performance.

Black or White

Another solo by Greg Howe for what I think was his first History tour concert – talk about jumping in at the deep end! A solid performance.

“Earth Song” fan intruder!

If you havn’t seen the stage intruder during this song, go and watch it here. The question is “How did a fan get so close to Michael?”. What happened is that Michael got into the crane as he usually did, which is about 15 – 20 metres off the crowd, just as it got to it’s full height, a fan jumped over the barriers, onto the crane and right to the top of it and grabbed Michael. He then stayed up at the top of the crane with Michael until the conclusion of the section (the crane couldn’t be brought down immediately) and then he refused to let go of Michael. He had to be ripped off by security.

It’s interesting to note that Michael was obviously concerned about the crazy boy’s safety because he was trying to force the boy’s arm behind the crane barrier and when this didn’t work restrained him tight with his arm. You could actually see utter shock in Michael’s eyes when this guy was running up to him … pretty surprising!

I guess that security lapse like this happens because everybody is looking at the protagonist instead of looking at the crowd for anything out of the ordinary. Michael has a stage intruder in Rome, Italy, during the Dangerous tour on “Smooth Criminal” and the dancers and security had to restrain him, so this has happened a few times.

Either way, one of the highlights of the tour! It’s a pity that there are no long shots to give context or the sense of height! Again, as stated yesterday, it look like the show was taken from the jumbotron feed so the the audience on the night WERE the long shot and only need a closer look at the action – which is why you need a whole new edit for broadcast (like the HBO Dangerous tour concert broadcast)

Heal the world and the finale History

For the first time in 2 hours the director actually shows a shot of the audience during “Heal the world”!

Pretty conventional ending to the show with nothing unusual.
