Let’s continue with out closer look at Michael Jackson’s History tour concert in Seoul Korea back in 1996. (You can read part 1 here). We’ve already covered some details of the concert as well as the songs “Scream” through to “The way you make me feel”. MICHAEL JACKSON HISTORY TOUR LIVE IN SEOUL, KOREA (CONCLUSION)
Random Michael Jackson concert fact!
The audience in the far east were always seated. Even the audience right in front of the stage had nice white plastic seats. I think that they are a little more conservative and not used to (historically anyway) the standing and going crazy like us Europeans. They still stand and go crazy anyway but in concerts like Brunei, the audience literally sat through the whole concert, which must have been quite an unusual feeling for Michael Jackson who is used to fans going crazy and wild. Also, back in 1992 when Michael was taken ill and didn’t turn up to his Wembley Dangerous Tour concert the audience started throwing bottle, so if they had chairs, I think Wembley stadium would have been demolished a good decade before it eventually was! 🙂
Anyway …. back to Seoul, Korea!
No Off the wall medley!
The concert set list was obviously still in flux, because the concert did not include, as was usual in leg 1 of the History tour, the “Off the wall medley” of “Rock with you”, “Off the wall” and “Don’t stop til you get enough”. This is a great performance and, as “The way you make me feel”, should have been included on the whole tour – that said, you can’t put them all in!
Jackson 5 medley
Michael was never as strong with this medley on the History tour as the Dangerous tour and previous Bad tour but this show’s vocals were extremely strained. Musically it was very good and Brad Buxer, the musical director has made changes to this song over the tour. The horns over the last part are greatly reduced compared to the latter parts of the tour, with more focus on the piano. I think that this works a lot better and sounds a lot better than later versions. My heart is always torn with “I’ll be there”. I really feel that it should have been dropped and it could have been replaced with something a little more up to date. That said it is piece of nostalgia and you have all ages at the concerts PLUS it’s a good chance to have a nice breather. The crowd seem to really get involved though. It’s too long for sure though.
Great musical performance by Brad Buxer and his band and a great performance by Michael. This sounded good. The spotlight sections looked great in the pitch black (which couldn’t be achieved in summer in the west due to the sun). The stage is obviously not polished to Michael’s liking because he is having difficulty executing his moonwalk, as we hinted at yesterday. After the breakdown at the end we have the addition of some sound effects (similar to the Billie Jean MTV Video awards performance), which was not used through out the whole tour.
Again, musically a great performance and a strong performance from Michael. I’m watching this right now and it’s becoming pretty clear that the footage was taken directly from the Jumbotron screens … there are no wide shots or long shots at all, which is a pity (so most broadcast concerts are a combination of the footage directly from Michael and then additional footage from the networks own camera’s, who would be able to roam the audience but not allowed on stage, for example). Michael was relaxed during this song and obviously pretty hot. He did look slightly ill during this concert. We see him during Thriller pick up his towel and throw it away. We also see him walk down on to the platform and clap with the crowd, which is unusual for him. Dance wise, The main Thriller dance was executed perfectly. The dancer in the mask at the end was over the top but it didn’t detract from the performance.
Tomorrow we are going to wrap up this concert and take a look at a very eventful Earth Song!
