Michael Jackson news: Thriller Jacket sold and more!

Original Thriller Jacket sold for $1.8 Million!

The top Michael Jackson news this week has to be the sale of the original 1982 Thriller jacket. Yes, that’s the one from the video in which he did the famous dance! Michael, obviously used several versions and jackets in this video. He had two jackets which he used for the dance, as well as the baseball jacket in addition.

Michael signed the jacket and gave it to his long time and loyal costume designers Dennis Tompkins and Michael Bush. The other used Thriller jacket is owned by the Michael Jackson estate.

Worthy vendors, Michael did it on purpose

Michael Jackson was not a stupid person and he knew the worth and the potential value of his Thriller jacket. I presume that is the reason he gave it to Michael Bush and Dennis Tompkins and specifically them.

I can’t think of anybody so loyal and talented in costume than these two. They provided Michael with outfits everyday of the trial and Michael even wore Michael Bush’s own clothes on stage! (Black Jacket in “I’ll be there” – Bucharest Dangerous tour). I was disappointed not to see them with a more prominent place in “This is it” but they were there and Bush really made me smile when he was explaining a costume and then quickly added “In the 20 years that we have worked with Michael” … Great costumes over the years and they deserve all the proceeds from their jacket, which Michael generously gave to them to do as they please.

The buyer!

The jacket was bought for $1.8 million dollars, obviously a sound investment and a permanent piece of pop culture, by a Texas commodities trader called, Milton Verret. He’s from good old Austin, Texas and he apparently also owns the “Bad” out fit too … so he’s building quite a Michael Jackson collection!

The new owner has said that he plans to put the jacket on tour of children’s hospitals so they get to see a little bit of Michael and a portion of the proceeds are also being donated to the animal preserve in California which look after Michael’s Bengal tigers, Thriller and Sabu, are living.

Other items, including Michael’s wigs were sold but that’s just weird, if you ask me, so we shall leave that.

A very good result! (VIDEO)

I think that this was a very good result and you can watch a video of the auction’s moment on the BBC website HERE

Neverland Tours – Photos

The helicopter tour of Neverland did go ahead in the end and you can read an article and look at some pictures in this piece called “Neverland from above“.

Finally … Shaquille O’Neal!

If you havn’t seen (or heard!) the Michael Jackson tribute from Shaq, then you need to check out the video on TMZ here. He actually featured on Michael Jackson’s “History” album … but probably should stick to basketball! :-)
