Michael Jackson Gone too soon and Heal the World live 1993

Michael Jackson performed 3 songs at the “American Reunion: The 52nd Presidential Inaugural Gala” on the 19th March 1993 and a total of 4 songs over the whole 3 day celebration and inauguration ceremony of the 42nd President of the United States, Bill Clinton. Michael Jackson previously performed “We are the world” the day before on the 18th January and you can read all about that here. You might be surprised to see that I wrote “4” songs and not “3”. He opened the proceedings with “We are the world”, then the next day he performed “Gone to soon” and “Heal the world” PLUS one more song … we will come to that in a moment!

Gone Too Soon and Heal the World Live (video)

Bill Clinton and Michael Jackson friends

We have previously talked about the close relationship and friendship between Michael Jackson and Bill Clinton and his support for his campaigns. He not only performed at his event but also later in 2002 (his final real concert), also for Bill Clinton.

Michael Jackson’s friend Ryan White: Tribute

Michael Jackson dedicated his Dangerous album song “Gone too soon” to a young man called Ryan White. A very sad story; he was diagnosed with Aids through a blood transfusion and suffered intense abuse and stigma. He died at the age of 18. Michael Jackson dedicated this performance to his friend and made a speech encouraging the President to do all he can to eradicate the disease.

Before performing “Gone too Soon”, Michael made a speech … here it is in full:

“I would like to take a moment from this very public ceremony to speak of something very personal. It concerns a dear friend of mine who is no longer with us. His name is Ryan White. He was a hemophiliac who was diagnosed with the AIDS virus when he was eleven. He died shortly after turning eighteen, the very time most young people are beginning to explore life’s wonderful possibilities. My friend Ryan was a very bright, very brave, and very normal young man who never wanted to be a symbol or a spokesperson for a deadly disease. Over the years, I’ve shared many silly, happy, and painful moments with Ryan and I was with him at the end of his brief but eventful journey. Ryan is gone and just as anyone who has lost a loved one to AIDS, I miss him deeply and constantly. He is gone, but I want his life to have meaning beyond his passing. It is my hope, President-elect Clinton, that you and your administration commit the resources needed to eliminate this awful disease that took my friend, and ended so many promising lives before their time. This song is for you Ryan

Gone Too Soon: The Performance!

Although we see the conductor conducting away, it seems to me like the music is from a backing track. The Orchestra were possibly playing over but you can’t hear much of that. This includes the final part of the song. (That is created by essentially having 2 tracks, restarting the second track when Michael resumes singing).

Michael’s vocals are completely live and he sings this really well. The hall is filled with emotion and so is Michael. He takes certain parts higher and certain parts lower than on the album.

Michael Jackson made a mistake in this song … he recovered PERFECTLY!

If you look to Michael’s right hand side and down you will see a kind of box cover. Underneath that box cover is a monitor with all of the lyrics on an autocue. This included the speech which was also delivered wonderfully, by autocue. The irony is that Michael nearly got himself into a situation with on of the lines. He sang the word “Sun” instead of “Flower”! He then realised his mistake and came in swiftly with “Sun … FLOWER, that is just beyond your reach” … very well done indeed! Take another look and you will see what I mean. Below are the original lyrics to “Gone too soon”.

Gone Too Soon Lyrics

Like A Comet
Blazing ‘Cross The Evening Sky
Gone Too Soon

Like A Rainbow
Fading In The Twinkling Of An Eye
Gone Too Soon

Shiny And Sparkly
And Splendidly Bright
Here One Day
Gone One Night

Like The Loss Of Sunlight
On A Cloudy Afternoon
Gone Too Soon

Like A Castle
Built Upon A Sandy Beach
Gone Too Soon

Like A Perfect Flower
That Is Just Beyond Your Reach
Gone Too Soon

Born To Amuse, To Inspire, To Delight
Here One Day
Gone One Night

Like A Sunset
Dying With The Rising Of The Moon
Gone Too Soon

Gone Too Soon

Heal The World: The Performance!

Although Michaels introduction to this song is live, the actual song is not sang live. We can hear a few words live near the end. Michael only ever sang this song (completely) live on one occasion and that was at the opening of the Atlantis resort in the Bahamas in 1998. (You can read about that here)

You have to remember that the audience was filled with politicians and he had just made a moving speech about a very serious subject, so it was a very respectful reaction from the audience. Michael Jackson’s dancing, picks up nearer the end! If I am correct it is one of the Clinton family that Michael picks up and kisses at the end, who is waving at Bill Clinton’s daughter.

Again, although, the conductor is conducting away, this song is not live … although, we can hear a couple of string sections nearer the end which suggest that they were playing over at a low volume.

Michael’s final song with Fleetwood Mac

You may not have noticed but Michael Jackson came on stage one more time that night. Michael Jackson performed with FLEETWOOD MAC!

Yes, Michael Jackson joined them on stage and sang “Don’t stop“,(not “Don’t Stop til you get enough”, though :-)which was a major campaign song for Bill Clinton. This was the first time in years that Fleetwood Mac had performed together and a very special reunion. Stevie Nicks seemed quite surprised to see Michael Jackson on stage with her actually!

You can watch a video of the performance below:

So there you go! Michael Jackson performing with Fleetwood Mac as well as “Gone too soon” completely live! I hope you enjoyed my article. Don’t forget to BOOKMARK the homepage (here), it will be updated daily with lot’s of articles and cool Michael Jackson reviews and stuff!
