The Red Parasol by Matej Sternen at the National Gallery of Slovenia in Ljubljana

I travelled to see The Red Parasol by Matej Sternen at the National Gallery of Slovenia in Ljubljana. Come join me there too. Welcome to Art, Culture & Travel with me, Anthony King.

“The Red Parasol,” painted in 1904 by Matej Sternen, is an oil on canvas piece, 125.5 x 85 cm, displayed at the National Gallery of Slovenia. Sternen, born on September 20, 1870, in Verd, Slovenia, was a significant Slovene Impressionist. He studied in Graz, Vienna, and Munich, where he embraced Impressionism, focusing on portraits and female nudes. Besides painting, Sternen was known for restoring artworks, including the Franciscan church ceiling in Ljubljana, which you will find two videos of, on my channel. During WWII, he stayed mostly apolitical but faced some controversy. Despite this, he continued working until his death in 1949.
