Lowry became well-known for painting northern textile towns like Salford, where he was from. His early oil paintings show things he’d paint a lot later: factories, smoking chimneys, and lots of people in the streets. Some people said his paintings were like him, a bit reclusive. But back then, it was normal to talk about how bad industry was, blaming old times for today’s problems. And the way he painted people, without any special features, was just like how other artists and writers at the time showed everyone as the same, no one standing out.
