How long is an average dancer’s career?

This is an interesting question and I think that it’s important to be positive and optimistic because the truth is that you can have a career in dance for almost your entire life. For example, a dancer called Sylvester, that I knew, who starred in the movie “Cleopatra” literally taught ballet well into his late seventies. So the natural progression from being a professional dancer is that of becoming a professional dance teacher which means that there is no “end date” as long as you are physiologically able to teach and to dance. With regards to your ability to be hired in the entertainment industry as a dancer, I would suggest that the options vary but might be comparable to that of an athlete and also your ability to keep injury free because ultimately if you are injured and can’t dance that is the end of your career in dance. With that said, the progression can easily take you from being a professional dancer to being a choreographer and being a dance teacher so the options are open for you to continue in dance and the entertainment industry for almost your entire life if that’s what you wish. Practically speaking in the pop world your optimum age range will be between the age of eighteen years old and thirty years old, however, ultimately it’s up to you and your unique set of circumstances as to how long you can dance for.
