Drawing by Achille Beltrame depicting Archduke Franz Ferdinand assassination in Sarajevo

I travelled to see the spot where Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. I previously produced a video about it. Today we’ll be looking at a 1914 incredible drawing by Achille Beltrame depicting the scene and the original spot as well. Come join me there too. Welcome to Art, Culture & Travel with me, Anthony King.

On June 28, 1914, Gavrilo Princip of the revolutionary group Young Bosnia assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife, Sophie, in Sarajevo. This event, known as the Sarajevo Assassination, directly triggered the onset of World War I, a devastating global conflict. The assassination set off a chain reaction of alliances entering the war, leading to unprecedented carnage and reshaping world politics. It was obviously reported worldwide. An Italian weekly newspaper called The Sunday Courier printed an incredible drawing by Achille Beltrame on the 12th July about 2 weeks later. The moments after were caught on camera but this drawing depicts the moment.
